MATH HOMEWORK:
In addition to our normal math work, we will have morning math every morning. In some cases, this math can appear a little remedial. It's meant to be done independently by the students. It also allows me, when we go over it as a class, to use higher-level questions and problems related to the ones they already did. Now to the homework: On the back of these morning math papers, we will be reviewing math work that we are doing during our regular math time. This is the work you can review with your child. You can simply ask them to explain their work to you. You are welcome to give them similar work as well! We believe that the purpose of homework is to practice concepts previously taught.
READING HOMEWORK:
2nd graders should be practicing reading at home for at least 15 minutes each day. This reading should be done orally to increase reading fluency, but students may choose to read silently, from time to time. I also believe that you reading to your child is just as important as them reading themselves! This 15 minutes can certainly include you reading aloud to your child. If you need “just right” books, or if encouraging your child to read at home is a struggle, please let me know so I can help your child be ready to read at home.
A special card will be going home to keep track of reading. For every 15 minutes your child reads, he/she may color in one bookworm on the card. Your child should be completing at least one card every two weeks (15 minutes of reading, Monday-Thursday). Please also complete the log sheet for each week. The log sheets will be collected every Monday. If your child chooses to read over the weekend, please log it, and have him/her color in a worm. Certificates will be awarded for each completed log, and we will display the cards in the classroom to show all the great reading we are doing! Happy reading!
AND:
If you see unfinished schoolwork come home that says "homework" on it, please have your child complete it at home and return it to me. Usually, this occurs if the child needs extra help at home, or if the child was not using his/her work time wisely at school.
